Day 2: Dong Van – Lung Cu / Meo Vac (25 km / 1hr (Lung Cu) / 50 km / 2 hrs (Meo Vac))

Destination:

  • Ma Le Market (close to China)
  • Lung Cu Flag Tower
  • Pai Lung Cave
  • Ma Pi Leng Skywalk
  • Ma Pi Leng Pass
  • Tu San Gorge
  • Xin Cai Market and Khau Vai Love Market

If you remain in Dong Van, you’ll take an out-and-back to Lung Cu today before continuing south to Meo Vac. You will have plenty of time to stop for pictures because the distance is not great.

The northernmost point of Vietnam, Lung Cu Flag Pole, will be your first stop. For a fantastic view of China, climb to the top of the flagpole. The route through Ma Le is passable and shouldn’t take very long. There are a few small stores or coffee shops nearby such as Café Cuc Bac, where you may get some refreshments. There are a few homestays available, but you don’t have the time.

You must now return to Dong Van by going back the way you came. The Tu San Gorge, which is the deepest in Vietnam, and the Ma Pi Leng Pass will be passed as you go down the major highway to Meo Vac. Hopefully the weather will cooperate so you can really appreciate the beauty and scale.

In the main town, finding a place to stay is not too difficult. It can be a good idea to contact in advance  to check on availability and make dinner reservations if you intend to stay in a remote area.

Day 3: Meo Vac – Ha Giang (140km / 5 hrs)

Destinations:

  • Old French Ruins
  • Thach Lam Waterfall
  • Du Gia Waterfall

On this day, you have two options for routes, and both are important days. You can take the 4C to enter Cao Bang Province and then connect to the QL34 to go from there through Bac Me to Ha Giang. The entire highway is paved and quite simple to drive. The fact that it is a little bit longer but speedier supports this.

The other path will take you past Mau Due and Du Gia, both of which are excellent places to stay on their own.

Despite being shorter, this route will take a little longer due to the narrower and windier road. You will need to decide what your priorities are and how much time you have for this portion of the trip because it is also more picturesque and intriguing than the main roads.

You must plan ahead for tickets if you’re taking the bus back to Hanoi. Once more, your bike rental company might be able to assist you.
